Excellent Ways to Celebrate International Women’s Day

Cleopatra had the ancient world on its knees. Why? Because she had the power to do so. Cleopatra was charismatic and intelligent, and she used both qualities to further Egypt's political aims. She was also ruthless, reportedly killing several family members in order to solidify her power. The only member of her house to learn Egyptian, she was said to be a popular ruler.

She is just one example of, how over the centuries, certain women have turned the tables, and have enjoyed and deserved power amongst the accepted male-dominated society.

Today we have International Women’s Day to recognise and celebrate the achievement of women and a quick look recent surveys show that it is very much needed. According to data from Ipsos, two-thirds of people don’t think women will achieve equality in their country without support for women’s rights from men. However, a quarter disagree with this. When split according to sex, roughly three in five men agree compared to seven in ten women. There is also some fluctuation in different countries. Agreement is high in countries such as Chile, Peru and Serbia, but it is markedly lower in countries such as Italy, Poland and Japan.

There is also disagreement on whether too much is expected from men in the fight for equality. The Ipsos survey found that 43% of people think that too much is expected of men in regards to supporting women’s equality while 46% disagree. Exactly 50% of men were found to agree that too much was expected of them while, unsurprisingly, a third of women thought the same.

Women have found power in a variety of ways throughout history in their struggle towards justice and equality. The great and influential American president, Theodore Roosevelt, had an equally powerful partner in his wife, Eleanor. She was a force to be reckoned with. Eleanor Roosevelt spoke out for an abundance of causes including women’s rights, poverty, discrimination, children’s issues and foreign affairs. She gave birth to the suffragette movement.

Around the world, women now have more power than ever before. Men still dominate decision-making - but the number of women is on the rise in parliaments and cabinets, judiciary and police forces, formal employment and education.

Women now have more influence over the decisions that affect their lives. Even in the most conservative societies, feminists and gender advocates have been able to forward more equitable policies and outcomes.

And so, we arrive at the point where we, as properly informed individuals, celebrate each and every woman and girl and lady and female. International Women’s Day is a day to be embraced, enjoyed, and used as a spring-board to shine the light on those women who feel left out and ignored. The abused and neglected.
